Fundraiser set to help MS sufferer

A group of young people have teamed up with local businesses to help a Riverview woman suffering from multiple sclerosis make the trip to the United States for a life-altering medical procedure.

The group has launched the “Save-a-mom” fundraising campaign to help Mary Parlee – a mother of three who is currently in a debilitated state because of the illness – travel to Albany, N.Y., and undergo what is being called the “liberation procedure” not yet available in Canada.

The procedure, which is making headlines around the world, has been shown to dramatically improve the condition of MS victims.

The trip, including the surgery, will cost in excess of $10,000, which prompted the need for a fundraising venture.

Parlee’s daughters and friends have organized a fundraiser tomorrow, starting at 6 p.m. at the Old Cosmo at 700 Main Street.

Local businesses, musical groups and restaurants are stepping up to help the cause, said organizers.

The bands Velvet Jersey and Short Stache will be performing and there will be food provided by local restaurants and a silent auction.

Up for auction will be items ranging from restaurant certificates to event passes, artwork and a trip to Halifax. Among the guests will be Tim Donovan, who says the procedure changed his life.
