Music pays for MS sufferer

Music proved to be the great equalizer in changing the life of a former musician who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

Saturday, a fundraiser was hosted at Riverbend Station in Calgary’s southeast to get Shea Bonney the money needed to go to Newport Beach, Calif. and undergo chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) treatment, which improves blood flow by stenting veins in the neck and chest.

Roughly $8,900 was raised in a very touching day for Bonney, who’s tried to stay away from music since he hasn’t been able to play, because experiencing it as an outsider hurts too much.

Eight bands, mostly made up of his friends and even an ex-wife, performed just to help him out.

“It was absolutely amazing … I cried a lot (Saturday),” Bonney said.

“I think the best part was my neighbours’ children … they made me cards (Saturday) that had all of their allowance money in it.”

Bonney leaves Monday, will have tests done Tuesday and Wednesday he’ll be admitted for the procedure that is said by its advocates to have near-immediate results.

“You wake up and you know,” Bonney said.

Bonney’s excited, but also freaked out — the 34-year-old was diagnosed at 21 and has trouble envisioning life without MS.

Expecting to be back next Saturday, Bonney’s left with a question of what he’s going to do if this works out as well as he hopes.

At one time he played “just about anything with strings,” and he would love to be able to perform again, or possibly to teach music instead.

“I keep trying to figure out what I’m going to do for a living now and I don’t know anything else … it’s all I’ve ever done,” Bonney said.
