Bowman-Birk Protease Inhibitor Induces Tr1 Cells And Suppress Effector Phase Of EAE Disease; A Potential NOVEL Therapy For Multiple Sclerosis (P1.183)

Background;Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system and second cause of disability in young adults. An effective and well tolerated oral agent without associated immunosuppression is highly desirable as monotherapy or for use in combination with other MS-modifying agents for treatment of multiple sclerosis. BBI is a small (8 kD) serine protease inhibitor derived from soybeans, with pronounced anti-inflammatory effects. Our previous studies have shown that oral BBI dramatically reduces autoimmune inflammation of the CNS in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE), resulting in amelioration of clinical disease and significant reduction of inflammation, demyelination and axonal loss.
